When NZTrio takes the stage with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra on 24 August 2025 at the Four Winds Theatre for Beethoven’s radiant Triple Concerto, it will be a true family affair. Violinist Amalia Hall will be joined by her brother, cellist Callum Hall—appearing as NZTrio’s guest cellist—alongside pianist Somi Kim in a joyous showcase of virtuosity and ensemble magic.
The performance coincides with NZTrio’s nationwide tour Fantastique, but for Callum, the opportunity to perform Beethoven with Amalia makes the Auckland concert especially meaningful. In a recent interview with Richard Betts for The Listener, Callum reflected:
“It’s great—we find it easy to get in sync and let the music flow. We’ve played together a lot since we were young.”
That musical partnership began in the Hall Family Quartet, where the siblings performed alongside elder sister Lara and violist brother Elroy. All four went on to successful professional music careers, with Amalia now a leading soloist and violinist with NZTrio.
MSO Music Director and Conductor Uwe Grodd notes the programme’s rich web of connections:
“Salina Fisher’s haunting Kintsugi was originally written for NZTrio. When I first heard it, I immediately felt its topical resonance, using the art of kintsugi as a metaphor for resilience through vulnerability and the beauty of imperfection. And having ‘half the Hall family’ performing in the Triple Concerto is a real treat—I’m very much looking forward to it.”
The concert also features Beethoven’s much-loved Symphony No. 6 ‘Pastorale’ a work close to Grodd’s heart:
“The Pastorale has been one of my favourite symphonic works since my teenage years. It’s so evocative—you can almost see Beethoven strolling through the Viennese woods in the morning, hearing the birds in the second movement.”
For audiences, the Pastorale programme promises an inspiring afternoon—opening with Salina Fisher’s shimmering Kintsugi for Orchestra and culminating in Beethoven’s beloved Sixth Symphony.
