As a boy soprano, Samuel Mataele won age group NSPAS Championship Awards as well as SAPACS Championship Awards.Now a 17-year-old countertenor, he recently won the prestigious Nicholas Tarling Junior Aria Competition with a breathtaking performance of Who May Abide from Handel’s Messiah. Uwe Grodd, adjudicator and conductor of the Manukau Symphony Orchestra, stated: “It was a professional performance in true Baroque style, displaying wonderful artistry and colours in the voice.” Samuel has performed as a soloist with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra at the Bruce Mason Centre and Auckland Town Hall, with organ in St Patrick’s Cathedral, and on March 20 gave a concert with string quartet for a private recital. Future performances include solos and duets for the Clevedon Valley Music Foundation Trust concert (March 30), the role of Didymus in Theodora with the Handel Consort and Quaire (May 3 and 4), and a solo appearance with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra (June 15).
