Handel achieved his greatest successes with his open-air music – most notably the Water Music and The Music for the Royal Fireworks – the latter composed for a firework display to celebrate the Aix Peace Treaty of 1749. What more could we choose to herald our 25th Anniversary! Celebration and Peace!Michael Houstoun joins the MSO for Bach’s Concerto in D minor – a somewhat solemn, almost tragic and serious work, that follows the concerto traditions of Vivaldi. J S Bach was the first composer to develop the concerto for a keyboard instrument and his works are thought to be arrangements of earlier concertos for melodic instruments.

Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem – the fantasy overture Romeo and Juliet – mirrors the tragic story of the two young lovers with intoxicatingly beautiful orchestral writing. We experience the dramatic conflict of the two families, the delicate love-story – with pillow talk – and the transfiguration of the unhappy lovers as they are released from earthly existence.

Concluding our 25th Anniversary programme is the mighty Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra. ‘In my compositions, no conscious effort has been made to be original, or Romantic, or Nationalistic, or anything else. I write down on paper the music I hear within me, as naturally as possible. I am a Russian composer, and the land of my birth has influenced my temperament and outlook. I say simply and directly what is in my heart – if there is love there, or bitterness, or sadness, or religion, these moods become part of my music, and it becomes either beautiful or bitter or sad or religious.’ – Rachmaninov
